It’s been a while since we’ve talked legal tech start-ups on the blog. That simply can’t continue.

At Kabuk, we’ve been lucky to be very tied in to the legal start-up community, working with Hersh Perlis and Chris Bentley at the Legal Innovation Zone, and Aron Solomon and Jason Moyse at Legal X. In fact, we were the Legal Innovation Zone’s first client when it launched this April and had the great pleasure of being at the launch parties for both zones (check out our launch posts here and here).

A lot has changed since then.

Joining Kabuk and Map Your Property in the zone came more start-ups like Codify Legal Publishing, Kinso and Small Claims Wizard and the space got a little busier.

Now we’re going through a whole new wave of growth. Desks are changing, spaces rearranging with the entrance of new start-ups Capture. it, Clausehound and Legal Swipe. When I say rearranging, I’m entirely serious. LIZ has grown so fast, that we’ve had to put in whole new desks to fit in all the new start-ups.

Exciting stuff. We couldn’t be happier to welcome these new teams to the zone. It’s always a pleasure to meet more like-minded entrepreneurs, interested in building a community of legal innovation. Can’t wait to disrupt the legal industry together!

Read more about some of our fellow LIZ floormates below:

Capture. it:  Michael Bluestein’s Capture. it is built to help lawyers accurately track billable minutes in real-time via an app that captures time spent answering e-mails – or taking phone calls – on your smartphone or desktop. This app helps to reduce the manual entry associated with tracking billable work and gives lawyers a better picture of time spent on client work. Bonus – activities tracked through the app are well documented helping to reduce client disputes over billing.

Clausehound: Clausehound’s online document assembly and knowledge management tools help lawyers and business owners create customized contracts from a pre-selected local precedent.  By building their documents in an integrated drafting environment, users are able to benefit from immediate access to necessary legal knowledge. By re-indexing this knowledge and digitally mapping it to contracts and clauses, Clausehound helps to expedite the drafting process for a lawyer, freeing up time that can be better spent on performing additional revenue-generating tasks.

Codify Legal PublishingPaolo Tonelli’s Codify Legal Publishing is using automation to transform the legal world. Codify’s automation tools help businesses and law firms stay abreast of regulatory changes to the law, to automate contracts, and to perform days’ worth of legal research in seconds. Stay tuned for more exciting developments from Paolo’s team soon!

KinsoKinsoStephen Eaton’s Kinso was developed to help family lawyers reduce time spent on administrative tasks. The cloud-based software includes functionality for form generation, support calculation, precedent drafting and file management. Kinso is now available in beta so check them out!Legal Swipe

Legal SwipeLoving it! This app helps inform consumers of their legal rights, during interactions with the police. Not surprising by a long shot, but most people have no idea about their legal rights. In a stressful situation, most of what they do know goes right out the window. Christien Levien’s Legal Swipe is here to help with an easy to use app that walks you through the interaction and coaches you on what to say/do.

Map Your Property: Devin Tu and Jordan Turner’s Map Your Property was our first start-up neighbour in the zone! This is a must-watch tool for real-estate lawyers, enabling them to conduct property assessments – complete with display land use values, such as city zoning, official plan, protected environmental and water features – in minutes.Think realtor.ca for land and real-estate development! Map Your Property is currently in beta and launching soon.

Map Your Property Interface

Small Claims Wizard: Selena Lucien’s Small Claims Wizard was developed to reduce financial, technical and linguistic obstacles associated with accessing Ontario Small Claims Court for self-represented litigants. The online service supports both plaintiffs and defendants and is the ideal tool for parties who wish to commence, defend, settle or enforce small claims lawsuits of any nature.
