The cost of not being able to access timely legal advice can be very high (both in a social and economic sense). The sad truth of the matter is – while most people need to seek legal expertise at some point in their lives, a large portion of Canadians in need do not access the legal services they require.

When it comes to access to justice, the statistics shout out. According to the Ontario Justice Education Network:

In Canada, over 20% of the population take no meaningful action with respect to their legal problems. Over 55% of the population think that nothing can be done, are uncertain of their rights, do not know what to do, think it will take too much time, cost too much or are simply afraid.

There are a multitude of reasons that prevent people from seeking legal advice. While cost is certainly one of these barriers, it does not stand alone. The legal industry has long been shrouded in mystery to the average person. When push comes to shove, many Canadians do not know what their legal rights are and don’t know what, if anything, can be done to help.

There are many fantastic resources out there to help promote education about legal services – Your Legal Rights (an Ontario focused resource) for one. Kabuk is trying to help solve this problem too. In addition to helping people source, and connect with, the right legal providers for their specific needs, Kabuk will be providing tons of content to help demystify the business of ‘lawyering’.
